My Grandson !!!

“How old are you Grandad?” “53yrs old came my reply”
WOW!! That’s really old isn’t it?

This is how the conversation started with my five year old grandson Mac, as we sat on my reclining (almost fully reclined just the way we like it loll) chair watching Horrid Henry; He was snuggled into my shoulder so far he was almost coming out the other side. These are times I cherish and will (Hopefully) keep with me forever. I tried to explain to him that 53yrs old isn’t really that old but the look in his eyes said he was having none of it loll !!

He carried on “I saw you on television the other day, did you see me waving to you?” I explained I couldn’t see him but I gave him a great big squeeze for doing so and kissed his cheek. Could I just explain at this point that Mac is only five years old but has quite clearly “BEEN HERE BEFORE!! LOL and has the wit and the wisdom of a 30yr old.

“I told my teacher that you had been on television but I told him I was a bit worried about you” he said with that innocent look in his eyes, yet, in the pit of my stomach I knew something was brewing!!

“What do you mean??” was my tentative reply.

“Well” he said taking a big breath, when I saw you on telly they said you were on DRUGS!!!! But I told my teacher that wasn’t true as only bad people took drugs!!

There was an ALMIGHTY COUGH!! As Elaine almost choked on her coffee and chaos ensued. My eight year old grandson was in a fit of giggles as the thought of his dear old grandad on drugs must have hit a funny bone!! The five year old sat in the knave of my arm was sat there looking bemused at all the fuss and I couldn’t believe what I had just heard!!LOL LOL

In my eighteen years or so as a grandad (You can work the maths out loll) I have never ever been as stuck as to what to say in my defence!! I was wild-eyed and open mouthed. So, let’s get this straight I said very nervously, “You told all your teachers that I was on telly but the telly said I was taking drugs but you said it wasn’t true because I’m your grandad and I wouldn’t do something like that? “YES” he said quite proudly.
Lost for words is SUCH an understatement at this point and I must have looked as though I was in a mime act as my mouth was moving but no sound was coming out!! I looked across at Elaine in sheer panic and mouthed the word HELP!!!

Elaine, as cool as ever, asked Mac to join her on the settee, so he did a swap with his older brother who was still in fits of laughter at what hit little brother had just come out with. With Mac sitting still and listening to his Nana as if his life depended on it (you can tell who the soft one is in this house, nannies defiantly the boss LOL) she had to explain that there are good drugs and bad drugs and the good drugs are only taken by good people who get them from a Doctor on prescription and not naughty people!! What a Genius my Elaine is!! Never in a million years would I have thought of that!!

How much of this he actually understood we really don’t know but sanity was resumed, well for ten minutes anyway.

This just shows how this awful illness of Dementia affects families in more ways that you could ever dream of. Actually having to have such a conversation like this with two of my grandsons just shows you how important it is to find a cure. Children and adults are put in this position every day and shouldn’t be. Children especially, they are the innocents and our future. They should be allowed to have their childhood without these worries.

Still, I suppose looking back now it was kind of funny!!!LOL.
Will I let them watch a future TV appearance?

I DONT THINK SO!!! LOL LOL

I haven’t been with Elaine to pick them up from school since, I wonder why??? LOL
Best wishes, Norrms and family xxxxxxxxxxxx
